Abstract

Three patients with alveolar proteinosis treated with crystalline trypsin are described. In two patients there was complete clinical remission following this therapy, but one patient died of progressive disease. The possible reasons for the variation in response among our patients and among those described in the literature are discussed. We believe a trial with this form of therapy (crystalline trypsin in daily doses of 100,000 units or more, by aerosol inhalation) to be worthwhile in patients who are seriously ill or who have progressive disease and that it should be of at least three weeks' duration.
