Summary and Update on Behavioral Interventions for Improving Adherence with Positive Airway Pressure Treatment in Adults
2021, Sleep Medicine ClinicsCitation Excerpt :PAP-naïve patients do not all start from the same baseline, and the need for more consideration of their perspective and willingness to undertake this difficult treatment is backed up by numerous cross-sectional and some longitudinal qualitative investigations. Some individuals struggle using their PAP machine, which they believe identifies them as ill, odd, or not able to take care of themselves,48–51 or they experience side effects, which have repeatedly been voiced as a barrier to continued PAP use.48,49,52–55 Social support can help many patients increase their PAP use and includes spousal support.48,49,52–54,56,57
What is known about the experiences of using CPAP for OSA from the users' perspective? A systematic integrative literature review
2014, Sleep Medicine ReviewsCitation Excerpt :CPAP use resulted in adverse side effects [32] to tolerate [55,61] or struggle with [49]. In particular 17 of the included studies investigated or reported side effects of CPAP to some degree [32,42–48,50–53,55,56,59–61]. Nasal [32,42,45,49,51,53,55,58,60,61] and mask related problems [42,46,51,53] predominated, with 50% of participants in one study [32] experiencing at least one side effect.
