Clinical and Laboratory ObservationsA single dose of nebulized budesonide decreases exhaled nitric oxide in children with acute asthma☆

Patients
A total of 30 children with asthma between the ages of 6 and 17 years attending our emergency department were enrolled for the study. Informed consent was obtained from the parents in every case. Subjects recruited for the study were those with episodes of acute asthma who had been confirmed to be allergic to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus by means of the fluorescent immunoabsorbent assay (Multiple Allergen Simultaneous Test; Medical Pharmacy Enterprise, San Jose, Colo). Demographic data and initial disease status in the control and experimental groups
There were no significant differences in the demographic data between control and experimental groups with respect to age (10.25 ± 2.80 years in control group; 9.08 ± 2.19 years in budesonide group), sex, eNO level, and blood pressure. The patients in each group had similar degrees of illness at entry as reflected by mean PIS, mean respiratory rate, and mean PEFR. There were no significant changes in blood pressure before and after treatment (Table).

Discussion
Evidence has indicated that a single intramuscular injection of methylprednisolone results in a decrease in the hospitalization rate for children with acute asthma.1 Similar results were noted after treatment with oral prednisone.2, 12 Aerosolized budesonide therapy together with nebulized salbutamol early in the treatment of acute moderate exacerbations of asthma assisted in early recovery.13 It is uncertain whether a single dose of nebulized steroid could effectively decrease airway
