An IGS and IGT procedure can include both fluorescence-based visualization and PDT with only one chemical agent being administered to the patient. In the early 1990s, high hopes were placed on the use of autofluorescence (AF) because the results of the first studies [24,25] had demonstrated that AF provided a greater possibility for detecting the areas of bronchial mucosa suspicious for early cancer than observation under white light. This method attracted researchers’ attention mostly due to its simplicity as it did not require administration of any medications and revealed tumor lesions as sites with a negative optical contrast without the need for detailed image analysis.

Currently, sputum cytology and chest radiography for early lung cancer screening is not being performed, as it does not improve outcome.13 Autofluorescence bronchoscopy (AFB) is a technology that detects autofluorescence distinctions between normal and malignant mucosa.29 Normal bronchial mucosa fluorescence is measured in red (>630 nm) and green (520 nm) when illuminated with blue light (440–480 nm).30
