We thank Mr Chatburn for his interest in our recent paper published in Respiratory Care.1 This study compared high-flow oxygen and T-piece during a spontaneous breathing trial in intubated patients simulated on the bench by using the ASL 5000 lung model. Mr Chatburn raised 3 questions we are very keen to answer.
In the ASL 5000, 3 mechanical conditions were simulated: low compliance (compliance 40 mL/cm H2O and resistance 8 cm H2O/L/s), high resistance (compliance 60 mL/cm H2O and resistance 12 cm H2O/L/s), and normal compliance (compliance 60 mL/cm H2O and resistance 8 cm H2O/L/s).
