Using Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy for the Treatment of Sialorrhea in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
2023, Advances in Radiation OncologyCitation Excerpt :First, we qualitatively and quantitatively measured the patient's baseline degree of sialorrhea. We used the Sialorrhea Scoring Scale (Table 1),5-8 which was developed for Parkinson's disease and validated for ALS, as well the Oral Secretion Scale (Table 2),9-12 which was designed specifically for sialorrhea in ALS. These scales are both simple rating tools in which patients report the severity of their sialorrhea symptoms.
Symptom Management and End-of-Life Care in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
2015, Neurologic ClinicsCitation Excerpt :Using a room humidifier for those not using noninvasive ventilation (NIV) and bleeding humidified air into the machine for those who do may reduce their tenacity. An open-label trial of 16 patients with thick secretions who had failed anticholinergic therapy and were treated with either propanolol 10 mg twice a day or metoprolol 25 mg twice a day found that 75% of patients reported decreased secretions, with sustained short-term efficacy in most.15 Drinking papaya or pineapple juice and reducing caffeine, milk, or alcohol have been anecdotally suggested.16

2013, Cancer/RadiotherapieCitation Excerpt :This symptom can cause social and psychological problems and increases the risk of aspiration pneumonia. Different methods have been tested for alleviating drooling, including pharmacological treatments (anticholinergics, scopolamine, beta-blockers, tricyclic antidepressants, botulinum toxin) and various surgical procedures [1,4–6,8,9,11]. Alternatively, radiotherapy of the salivary glands has been tested when previous pharmacological treatments produced unsatisfactory results and/or side effects [10,12–15].
Rehabilitation of motor neuron disease
2013, Handbook of Clinical NeurologyCitation Excerpt :Thick mucus deep in the throat that the patient is unable to clear is particularly bothersome and poses a risk of aspiration. Agents to thin the mucus include β-blockers (Newall et al., 1996), guaifenesin, and nebulized saline or acetylcysteine (Fig. 41.8). A mechanical cough-assist device (insufflation−exsufflation device) or a suction device may be useful (Fig. 41.9).
