Heliox, an inhaled helium-oxygen mixture that typically consists of 80% helium and 20% oxygen, has been considered as a potential treatment in the setting of acute asthma exacerbation. The interest in heliox use has resulted in multiple reports of patients with various obstructive respiratory diseases. However, the impact of heliox in the treatment of acute asthma is currently unclear given the paucity of controlled studies.
